Table settings and seem so rare today that it makes me worry! When I was growing up I was taught the proper use of all pieces of known silverware, from the shrimp cocktail fork to the dinner fork... every piece had a unique and special purpose.
I love the idea (call me romantic) of having multple sets of dinnerware for various purposes. One for regular use, one for formal dinners, one for dinner parties, one for garden parties, one for tea, and so forth. I believe the varous sets can reflect a moment in time, personality, friendship, and tradition.
